When Does Conception Happen?
Conception happens when sperm fertilize an egg in the fallopian tube. This usually occurs during the few days leading up to and after ovulation, typically on day 14 in a regular 28-day cycle. However, every woman’s cycle is unique, making pinpointing the exact day of conception tricky.
Since sperm can live in the reproductive tract for up to five days and an egg can survive about 12–24 hours after ovulation, there’s a short window during which conception is possible.
How Can I Estimate My Conception Date?
The most common method for estimating conception is counting backward from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP). Healthcare providers typically use this date to estimate how far along you are in your pregnancy.
If you know the day you ovulated or had unprotected intercourse, that information can also help. Ultrasounds will estimate your gestational age (how far along you are) and provide a likely conception timeframe.
Are There Any Physical Signs?
You won’t usually feel conception happening. However, some women experience implantation bleeding or mild cramping a few days after fertilization, or they might experience changes in their cervical mucus or basal body temperature.
However, many women don’t experience any early symptoms.
