How to Prepare for an Abortion Pill

How to Prepare for an Abortion Pill

If you’re pregnant and considering abortion, you’ve probably heard about the abortion pill. It might feel like a fast and private solution, but before taking that step, there are a few important things to know.

Need support now? You can chat confidentially with a nurse for free at (832) 979-1355. No judgment. Just real answers.

Medical Abortion Checklist

1. Be Certain You Are Actually Pregnant

This might sound obvious, but when you’re stressed or scared, it’s easy to assume without confirming.

A positive home test doesn’t tell you everything. A medical pregnancy test and ultrasound can confirm whether you’re actually pregnant, how far along you are, and whether the pregnancy is viable.

The abortion pill should never be taken unless a pregnancy is medically confirmed, and it should always be done under medical supervision.

2. Know the Status and Stage of Fetal Development

Up to 1 in 5 known pregnancies end on their own through miscarriage.¹ So even if a test is positive, it doesn’t always mean the pregnancy will continue. An ultrasound can confirm whether it’s developing normally or if there’s an ectopic pregnancy, which is a serious medical emergency.²

Ultrasound also gives you an accurate idea of how far along you are. The abortion pill is only approved for use up to 70 days from your last period (around 10 weeks).³ Taking it beyond that window increases the risks.

3. Make Sure This is Your Decision

When you’re pregnant unexpectedly, everyone seems to have an opinion. It might feel like your partner, your friends, or even your parents are pushing you one way or the other.

But here’s the truth: no one can make this decision for you. Not legally. Not emotionally.

If someone is pressuring or threatening you to have an abortion, that’s not okay, and you have the right to say no. You’re not alone. If you're unsure what to do, or if you're feeling forced into something you don't want, talk to someone you trust.

Our center offers free, confidential, and professional support so you can take the time you need to process your options without pressure.

4. Know The Risks

Abortion—especially a chemical one—isn’t just a physical procedure. It can come with emotional weight, too. Many women report feeling regret, sadness, or anxiety afterward, especially if they felt rushed or unsure going in.

It’s also important to get tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) beforehand. Some STIs, like chlamydia, can spread during a medical or surgical abortion and may lead to serious complications like Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), which can affect your ability to have kids in the future.

Chemical abortion can be more intense than expected. Some women describe the experience as painful and emotionally difficult, especially when going through it alone at home. You deserve to have all the facts so you can feel confident and safe in whatever you choose.
